Biodiversity Conservation Organization

INTRODUCTION
Dr. Edward o. Wilson-cautioned Lost -1 species per million species each year Today annual rate of extinction is 1000-10000

time faster. If nothing is done one fifth of all the plants and animal species now seen on the earth or on the road to extinction.

Goal of biodiversity management.

1.To strike the optimal balance between biodiversity conservation, Advising human sustainable living and benefit sharing. Depends on 1. the social, political, economic and cultural contexts. 2. Proper tools and methods.

Requires: 1) Reliable site-specific baseline information. 2) Knowledge on how the value generation in specific ecosystems will respond to changing environments. 3) Integrated regional models that incorporate the biophysical economic and technological changes

Two categories of organizations are necessary:

1) Primarily concerned with framing policies

and methodologies for execution beside serving as a source of data. 2) Involved in financing.
Some organizations like IUCN, UNESCO and UNEP are involved in both the activity.

ORGANISATIONS PRIMARY INVOLVED IN FRAMING POLICIES AND METHODOLOGIES FOR EXECUTION

International Union for Conservation of Nature and Natural Resources

IUCN
Founded in 1948 as the worlds first global

environmental organization More than 1,000 member organizations in 140 countries including 200+ government and 800+ non-government organizations Has 11,000 voluntary scientists and experts Funded by governments, bilateral and multilateral agencies, foundations, member organizations and corporations

IUCNs vision and mission

Vision: is a just world that values and conserves nature Mission : is to influence, encourage and assist societies throughout the world to conserve the integrity and diversity of nature and to ensure that any use of natural resources is equitable and ecologically sustainable.

IUCNs Function
Knowledge: IUCN develops and supports cutting-edge

conservation science, particularly on biodiversity and ecosystems and how they link to human wellbeing.
Action: IUCN runs thousands of field projects around the

world to better manage natural environments.

Influence: IUCN supports governments, NGOs, international

conventions, UN organizations, companies and communities to develop laws, policy and best-practice.
Empowerment: IUCN helps implement laws, policy and best-

practice by mobilizing organizations, providing resources and training, and monitoring results.

UNEP
It was founded as a result of the United Nations Conference on the Human Environment in June

1972. has its headquarters in the Gigiri neighborhood of Nairobi, Kenya. UNEP also has six regional offices and various country offices. Its activities cover a wide range of issues regarding the atmosphere, marine and terrestrial ecosystems, environmental governance and green economy.

UNEP
UNEP has aided in the formulation of

guidelines and treaties on issues such as the international trade in potentially harmful chemicals, transboundary air pollution, and contamination of international waterways.

Main activities of UNEP

UNEP's main activities are related to climate change;
including the Territorial Approach to Climate Change (TACC);

disasters and conflicts ecosystem management environmental governance harmful substances resource efficiency.

UNESCO
is a specialized agency of the United Nations

(UN). Its stated purpose is to contribute to peace and security by promoting international collaboration through education, science, and culture in order to further universal respect for justice, the rule of law, and human rights along with fundamental freedoms proclaimed in the UN Charter.

UNESCO-MISSION AND PRIORITIES

UNESCOs stated aim is "to contribute to the building of

peace, the eradication of poverty, sustainable development and intercultural dialogue through education, the sciences, culture, communication and information. Other priorities of the Organization include attaining quality education for all and lifelong learning, addressing emerging social and ethical challenges, fostering cultural diversity, a culture of peace and building inclusive knowledge societies through information and communication. The broad goals and concrete objectives of the international communityas set out in the internationally agreed development goals.

ICSU
It represents 80 of the worlds scientific

academy or research councils,. 50 nations are involved. Contains 8 international unionsIncluding IUBS and IUBMB. It supports 19 bodies that are inter disciplinary. Ex: SCOPE and IGBP.

FOOD AND AGRICULTURE ORGANISATION

FAO
Established-1945 Head office-Roam Chief organization for protection and conservation of germplasm

of all food plants and animals. Example- TFAP program *initiated in 1985 *intended to halt the destruction of tropical forest *promote their sustainable development. *focuses on the 5 issues-fuel wood, -agro forestry -land use and watersheds. - forestry management, tropical forest ecosystem conservation -Strengthening the institutions for research, training and education.

FAO leads international efforts to defeat hunger. Serving both developed and developing countries, FAO acts as a neutral forum where all

nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO is also a source of knowledge and information, and helps developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices, ensuring good nutrition and food security for all. Its Latin motto, fiat panis, translates into English as "let there be bread". As of 8 August 2008, FAO has 191 members states.

WORLD CINSERVATION MONITORING center

WCMC
WCMC is an executive agency of the United Nations

Environment Programme, based in Cambridge in the United Kingdom. UNEP-WCMC has been part of UNEP since 2000, and has responsibility for biodiversity assessment and support to policy development and implementation. was previously an independent organization, jointly managed by IUCN, UNEP and WWF established in 1988, and prior to that the Centre was a part of the IUCN Secretariat. Monitors-conservation and sustainable development. Maintains-published published literatures -unpublished reports -references to conservation organizations -contacts and correspondents through out the world.

WCMC
Serves-source of information

-biological information covers *Distribution, ecology and status of 52,000 plants. -data includes *population size, potential and acute threats -lists *key sites of high biodiversity *their location *importance of 16000 protected area world wide.

CBA International
Is an intergovernmental organization. Provides very important research data together with

developmental and services for agriculture forestry and related fields through out the world. Houses the worlds largest bibliographic database in the form of CBA abstract on scientific and research development. Comprises-international institutions 1) Entomology 2) Mycology 3) Biological control 4) parasitology.

ISBI
Goal:

to facilitate the acquisition, dissemination and utilization of ecological knowledge to ensure the sustainability of biosphere.

Organizations involved in financing biodiversity

WORLD WIDE FUND FOR NATURE and natural resources

WWF
WWF was born into this world in 1961. Head quartered in Glands, Switzerland. Indian unit was established in 1969. Currently there are more than 1300 WWF

conservation projects underway around the world.

WWF's Mission Statement

To stop the degradation of the planet's natural environment and to build a future in which

humans live in harmony with nature, by: *conserving the world's biological diversity *ensuring that the use of renewable natural resources is sustainable *promoting the reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption

WWF's Guiding Principles

To guide WWF in its task of achieving the mission, the following

principles have been adopted. WWF will: be global, independent, multicultural and non party political. use the best available scientific information to address issues and critically evaluate all its endeavours seek dialogue and avoid unnecessary confrontation build concrete conservation solutions through a combination of field based projects, policy initiatives, capacity building and education work involve local communities and indigenous peoples in the planning and execution of its field programmes, respecting their cultural as well as economic needs strive to build partnerships with other organizations, governments, business and local communities to enhance WWFs effectiveness run its operations in a cost effective manner and apply donors funds according to the highest standards of accountability.

GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL FACILITY

GEF At the IMF world bank development committee meeting of 1989- France suggested- creation of environmental protection activity. 1990-agreement reached between 25 countries-GEF was created. World bank, UNDP, and UNEP- in administrating.

GEF accept proposals for funding in 4 areas.

1) Protecting ozone layer 2) Limiting greenhouse gas emission

3) Protecting biodiversity
4) Protecting international water Biodiversity project funded by GEF

*Congo Tropical forest preservation. *Wetland protection in Elkala Nationasl park of Algeria.

WHF (world heritage fund)

was established pursuant to the world

Heritage Convention(WHC) in 1972. Raises funds by a combination of voluntary and compulsory contributions. Funding-given to protect cultural landscapes and WHS established by UNECSO. Annual budget-US $2 million.

CONCLUSION
People selling their future to finance their present.

THANK YOU

Fostering sustainable consumption and

production by leading global efforts to ensure natural resources are produced, processed and consumed in a more sustainable way.

UNEP
The building sector is responsible for more than a third of

global resource consumption annually, including 12 per cent of all fresh water use, and produces 40 per cent of solid waste. The International Energy Agency has estimated that fuel consumption and CO2 emissions from the world's cars will roughly double between 2000 and 2050.
It is estimated that around 140 billion tonnes of

agricultural biomass is produced annually. A global Green Economy requires much higher recycling rates of specialty metals such as lithium, neodymium and gallium - yet only about 1 per cent of them are recycled.
