COMPANY PROFILE
The company was incorporated as Birla Communications Limited on March 14, 1995 and commenced business on August 11, 1995. Registered office is in Mumbai, Maharashtra. The company name was changed to Birla AT&T Communications Limited on May 30, 1996 following the execution of a joint venture agreement dated December 5, 1995 between AT&T Corporation and Grasim Industries Limited. Changed name to Idea Cellular Limited and launched "Idea" brand name in 2002.

IDEA is the first cellular company to launch music messaging with 'Cellular Jockey', 'Background Tones', 'Group Talk', a voice portal with 'Say IDEA' and a complete suite of Mobile Email Services.

Legalities and litigation

Telecom tribunal TDSAT has set aside DoT''s penalty on Idea Cellular for failing to roll out services and directed the Telecom Ministry to pay Rs 25,000 to Aditya Birla group firm as cost of litigation. Total contingent liabilities have increased by ~65 percent YoY mainly because of the DoT's stance on Idea's merger with Spice. Idea Cellular is planning to appeal against the Delhi High Courts adverse judgment on its merger with Spice Communications, around Rs 1,460 crore is stuck as part of its litigation with the Department with Telecommunications (DoT).

Idea has not received 3G spectrum in Punjab because of its ongoing tussle with DoT on its acquisition of Spice.

Despite the hyper competitive phase over the past two fiscals, Idea Cellular has improved its revenue market share by 210 bps to 13.2 percent (FY11 end) and is the fastest growing Indian telecom operator (gainer in MNP).

Idea Cellular Infrastructure Services Limited, is a tower company owning towers in Bihar and Orissa service areas and provides passive infrastructure services in these service areas.

Idea Mobile Commerce Services Limited (Formerly Carlos Towers Limited), is engaged in the business of Mobile Banking, though it is yet to commence commercial operations.

Swinder Singh Satara and Company Limited, is engaged in the trading of Data Cards, mobile handsets and Fixed Wireless Phones.

STRATEGIC ALLIENCES
In 2000, Tata Cellular was a company providing mobile services in Andhra Pradesh. When BirlaAT&T brought Maharashtra and Gujarat to the table, the merger of these two entities was a reality. Thus Birla-Tata-AT&T, popularly known as Batata, was born and was later branded as !dea.

2001: Acquired RPG Cellular Limited Then Idea set sights on RPGs operations in Madhya Pradesh which was successfully acquired, helping Batata have a million subscribers.

Joint Ventures Indus Towers Limited, in which Aditya Birla Telecom Limited (ABTL) holds a 16% stake, is a joint venture between the Bharti group, Vodafone Essar group and the Company (through ABTL), and provides passive infrastructure services in 16 service areas.

INFRASTUCTURE
The company is a pan India integrated GSM operator covering the entire telephony landscape of the country, and has NLD and ILD operations. They offers basic voice and short message service (SMS) services to high-end value added and general packet radio service (GPRS) services, such as Blackberry, Datacard, Mobile TV and Games.
