WHAT IS A DATA STORAGE DEVICE ?

A device for storing information . Storing can be done in any

form, spanning from manual power in handwriting , to vibrations in phonographic recording, or storage on optical devices using electromagnetic energy.

WHAT IS A COMPUTER DATA STORAGE DEVICE ?

A device or a computer equipment, in or on which

data and instructions can be stored, usually in binary form. Such as a magnetic tape, disk, etc.

TYPES OF STORAGE DEVICES

There are two types of storage devices

PRIMARY STORAGE DEVICES SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICES

PRIMARY STORAGE DEVICES

Memory area of computer where current data is stored Directly accessible to CPU Also known as RAM(random access memory), main

memory or internal memory

Primary storage device

This type of storage is the fastest type of memory in your

computer and is used to store data while it's being used. For example, when you open a program data is moved from the secondary storage Into the primary storage.

TYPES
Processor register
1. Located inside the processor.
2. 3.

Holds instruction to perform various operations and calculation. Fastest form of data storage .

Processor cache
1.

2.
3.

It is located between CPU and main memory (RAM). It is also known as intelligent memory. It has two further types L1 and L2 cache.

RAM(random access memory)

It is a volatile memory.
Made of integrated circuits. Used in executing instructions.

o TYPES 1. SRAM (static random access memory) 2. DRAM(dynamic random access memory)

FPMRAM(fast page mode ram)

EDORAM(extended data out ram) SDRAM(synchronous dynamic ram)

Some Rams

SECONDARY STORAGE DEVICES

It is a non-volatile memory.
Not directly accessible to processor. It is also known as External memory or Auxiliary storage.

TYPES
HDD (hard disk drive)
SSD(solid state drive) Optical Storage devices Magnetic Storage Devices Memory Sticks/ Flash Drives

HARD DISK DRIVES

It stores data electromagnetically.

Uses spinning disks and read/write

heads.
Can store more than TYPES

3 TeraByte(3 x 1012).

SATA 2. ATA
1.

ATA
Stands for Advancement Technology Attachment.
Its uses an older interface to connect hard disk. It has lower data transfer rate (133MB/s) than SATA. Also known as PATA (parallel advancement technology attachment).

PATA HARD DISK

PATA Connectors

SATA
SATA stands for Serial Advancement Technology Attachment.
It uses a newer and faster interface to connect with computer. It provides up to 600MB/s data transfer. It is thinner than ATA.

SSD(solid state drive)

Physically like HDDs.
Dont use any moving parts which make it noiseless and power saver. It is DRAM based technology. Access data in less than 10 microseconds. Data transfer rate 1.5Gb/s.

OPTICAL STORAGE DEVICES

Data is stored digitally with help of LASER.
Data is read and written by a Device CD-ROM. It is a non-volatile storage device.

TYPES 1. CD 2. DVD 3. Blu-ray disc

CD(compact disc)
Usually used to store audio data.
It comes in three sizes.

DVD(Digital versatile disc)

Usually it is use to store videos and data storage.
It can store about 4.7 GigaByte of data. There are different types of DVD, such as HD-DVD, DVD-R,

DVD-RW etc. It has two sizes. 1. Standard DVD 2. Mini-DVD

Magnetic Storage devices

Data is stored by magnetizing the medium.
Its a non- vloatile memory.

There are three types of Magnetic storage devices:

1. Floppy-Disc 2. Magnetic Tape

3. Credit Card Stripe

Floppy-Disc
Contains a magnetic storage medium.
Storage capacity of Floppy is 1.4 MB. In 1969 the first floppy disk was introduced.

It is rarely used today.

It has three standard sizes. 1. 8 inches 2.5 inches 3.3 inches

MEMORY STICKS/ FLASH DRIVES

o

Memory Stick It is a small card. Can store all kind of data. Also called memory card. Used in Cameras, mobiles, gaming consoles etc. Can store more than 32 GB of data.

Flash Drives
Typically

removable

and

rewritable. Can Store up to 256 GB of data. Most of the drives weigh 30 g (1 oz) and allows more than 1 million writes or erase cycle.
