Bogot was founded on the 6th of August 1538 by the Spanish conquistador Gonzalo Jimnez de Quesada who fough the Chibcha Indians near the site of the populous tribe center called Bacat. The new city became the vice-regal capital of New Granada in 1717. It was captured by Simn Bolvar in 1819 and was the capital of the independent nation of Great Colombia (which included modern day Colombia, Ecuador, Panama, and Venezuela). It became the capital of New Granada (later renamed Colombia) in 1830 when Great Colombia was The city expanded rapidly after 1940 as large numbers of rural dissolved. Colombians migrated there in search of greater economic opportunities. It is sometimes called the Athens of South America. Bogot is now Colombia's largest financial, political, and cultural center. You can catch a cab everywhere, but is highly recommended to reach them by phone in one of this numbers: 599-9999, 3111111 or 411-1111. However be careful and always count your change after you pay the service

By Transmilenio:

It is extremely affordable, clean and efficient. However, there are some main routes that are not yet reached by Transmilenio. The ticket costs 1,500 COP. Is fast and safe, but it can get really full in the afternoon or in the night.

Monserrate:

it has the most spectacular view of the city. You can get there by funicular or teleferico, or if you want you can take one to go an the other to come back. There are many cute souvenir stores and youll find nice Colombian food up there

Torre Colpatria:

Bogota's tallest building and one of South America's tallest buildings is located in El Centro. You can visit the panoramic deck on the top of building on Saturdays and Sundays; make it a must see.3,000 COP

La Candelaria:

There are a lot of interesting museums and old churches in what is the oldest Bogot neighborhood. The most important places are La Catedral, Plaza de Bolivar, Palacio de Nario, Iglesia del Carmen, Biblioteca Luis A Arango, the Colonial Art Museum and the old architecture of the houses and buildings.

Maloka:

National Museum:

Carrera 7 No. 28-66. The National Museum is the oldest in the country and one of the oldest in the continent. Permanent exhibitions present archeology and ethnography samples from most antique Colombian men vestiges, 10,000 years BC, up to XX century indigenous and afro- Colombian art and culture.

Gold Museum:

Carrera 5 con Calle 16. It houses anticue trasures made of pure gold, mainly by the aborigines of the Colombian Territory. It is a very nice place to expend the day if you are a fan of the aborigine gold art.

Museum of Colonial Art:

Calle 24 No. 6-00. The Colonial Museum contains Viceroy-ship art, silver plates, the Virgin of the Light and the most characteristic Gregorio Vsquez de Arce y Ceballos collection, among other valuable Colombian culture treasures

Banco de la Republica Art Collection :

Calle 11 No. 4-41. Exhibits Permanent Banco de la Repblica Art Collection consisting of nearly 3,000 paintings, sculptures and assembly of Colombian and Latin American masters from the XVI century to our days.

The newest mall in Bogota and largest in South America is located next to the Portal del Norte Transmillenio station. It has a wide variety of shops, designer stores, and a food court with many local and international choices. A very fun and modern place.

Hacienda Santa Barbara,

a shopping mall made out of an old "hacienda", in the bohemian/trendy neighbourhood of Usaquen.

Salto del Tequendama:

Its a very beautiful spot to visit, its only an hour away from the city by car and there you will see the most beautiful fall of water youll find in Colombia. Its also a relaxing place to be because of the nature environment. Catedral de Sal de Zipaquir: An impressive Cathedral hewn out of a salt mine inZipaquira. A visit is by guided tour. English, German, French, and Spanish guides are available. The current cathedral is the second construction and opened in 1995 after the first one had to close because of safety concerns. Laguna del Cacique Guatavita: This spiritual lake is where the legend of El Dorado originated. The Muisca Indian King used to have religious ceremony in the middle of the lake, painted all his body with gold dust, and threw gold things offered in sacrifice into the lake.
