Body System

The heart belongs to the circulatory

system.
Location
• The heart is located in the middle of the chest,
between the two lungs.
Functions
• The heart is a muscle that contracts
continuously and regularly.
The heart pumps blood into the lungs and
through the body.

• The pump action is caused by flow of

electricity through the heart that repeats itself
in a cycle.
Transplants
• There were 2,192 heart transplants in the U.S in
2006.

• 2,125 heart transplants in 2005.
Success Rate

• In June 15, 2007 a one year survival rate for a

transplant is 87.4% males and 85.5% females.

A three year survival rate for males is 78.7% and

for females 75.9%.
• For a five year survival rate 72.3% males survived,
while 67.6% females survived
Life Expectancy
The life expectancy varies according
to risk factors prior to the transplant.
people waiting

• Everyday about 4,000 people go on the waiting
transplant.

• Over the past year there have only been enough
transplants to provide for 2,000 of them
Disqualified to
Donate

In order to be qualified to donate you must be at the

legal age of sixteen and must weigh at minimum 110
pounds. Also, you must be healthy
Died Waiting

• About 600 people die each year waiting for

heart transplant.
Required
• in order to be required for a transplant the heart
must be irreversibly damaged by heart disease.
• Also people with multiple heart attacks that
cannot be treated are contendars for it or people
that cannot perform it’s daily functions and are
at risk to die
Disqualified to Receive
• People who are old in age

Who have a history of cancer

• Any active infections

• Anyone with diabetes who damaged

other organs

Anyone with history of not being able to

follow medical treatments
Two local hospitals that
will carry out the heart
transplant process is The
University Of Pennsylvania
Hospital and Jefferson
Hospital

Hospitals
Surgical
Procedure
The heart transplant surgery itself takes
about seven
hours, but then you have to put into
concideration if there will be and
complications that may add some time.
Cost of Transplant

The cost of a heart transplant for the recipient will
cost between $110,000 and $287,000 depending on
the length of the stay, evaluation, organ procurement,
hospital charges, physician fees and follow up care.
Cost to Remove
The cost to remove a heart
ranges from $110,000 to $287,000

There is such a big range in price because it all

depends on the length of the stay, evaluation, organ procurement
hospital charges, physician fees and follow up care.
Donor Dead or Alive
For the transplant to take
place the organ donor must be
brain dead.
Anti-rejection

• The anti-rejection
drugs used after
transplants are also
called
immunosuppressive
drugs.
• One of these drugs is
called sirolimus.
Restrictions
• There are not many
restrictions after
the procedure

• After rehabilitation
you shall be able to
go back to work
and back to your
normal life routines.
Post Operative
Therapy
• The patient is taken to an intensive care unit
to recover

• How long they remain in hospital depends on

post-transplant on the patient's general health

• Doctors typically like the new recipients to

leave hospitals soon after surgery because of
the risk of infection in a hospital

• Once the patient is released, they will have to

return to the hospital for regular check-ups
