The purpose of process planning is to select and define, in detail, the processes that have to be performed in order to transform the raw material into a given shape. The primary object of process planning is to define feasible process and available resources act as constraints. The secondary object of process planning cost, quality and other factors.

PROCESS PLANNING
Process planning is concerned with planning the transformation

processes needed to convert the raw-materials into finished products.

A production process is a series of manufacturing operations

performed at work stations to achieve the design specifications of planned output.

Process planning is concerned with the preparation of route sheets that

list the sequence of operations and work centers require to produce the product and its components.

CLASSIFICATION OF PROCESS PLANNING

Manual process planning
Computerized process planning

MANUAL PROCESS PLANNING

Based on planner experience & knowledge
Time consuming of develop process plan Plan developed are not consistent

COMPUTERIZED PROCESS PLANNING

Made by with the help of CAD/CAM
Produce more accurate & consistent plan Less time required to develop process plan Economical process planning Skill requirement of process planner are reduced to develop feasible

MISSION OF PROCESS PLANNING

Understanding the functions, conditions, and specifications of the

product, clarifying the relative assembly positions and mutual functions, and estimating the suitability of the design requirements.
Examining and analyzing the design data by carefully reading through

the assembly and parts drawings.

STEPS OF PROCESS PLANNING

Interpretation of product design data

Stock design
Selection of machining process Selection & Determination of machine tool, fixtures & datum Sequencing of operations Determination of operational dimensions & tolerances

Determination of proper cutting conditions

Calculation of total time of setup & machining Generation of process sheets

BENEFITS OF PROCESS PLANNING

It can reduce the process time of production It can reduce both process planning and manufacturing cost It can create more consistent plans It can produce more accurate plans It can increase productivity It does not required the number of labor

SUMMARY
In early 1970s, the function of process planning received very little attention. Today, manufacturing environment has become more complex and competition has become more intense. Hence, process planning has been accepted as critical to the success of many companies. Process planning the gap between design and manufacturing. In addition, of computer the process planning is feasible & easy to study & processing.
