Seismic Analysis of TMP Support By Dheeraj Kumar Sharma (IPR)

Problem The height of the TMP support is increased by 330mm. Hence, this is the assessment of seismic event on the increased height of TMP Support. Figure describes the position of the equipment in the lab wrt vessel.

vessel

BOLTED 14.5m

TMP

SIMPLY RESTING ON RUBBER PADS (and hence on floor) 7m

Assumptions:

As the task could be difficult for calculating (manually) simultaneously the seismic effect of vessel on TMP support as well as seismic effect on TMP itself. Hence for simplifying the problem few assumptions are considered:
1. The vessel is considered as the rigid part and its considered that it will not deform at the time of earthquake as our objective is not to analyze the vessel for earthquake. It means that anchor bolts of vessel are rigid enough and wont get deformed at the time of earthquake. 2. Hence the only load that will be acting on the legs is the weight of TMP. 3. However in the case of rigid vessel-elbow-TMP connection, vessel will not allow TMP to move but in analysis, it is considered that the TMP deflects because of the horizontal force caused by earthquake. Hence its a conservative approach to calculate the stress on legs. 4. As the CAD model or the information about the inner part is not available hence the CG of the TMP is considered at the mid of the TMP as shown in fig.

Few Words Before Calculations

Seismic analysis of non structural components is provided in IS 1893(part 1) and IBC 2006.
But in below mentioned calculations, Fp (seismic horizontal force) is calculated according to IS 1893(part1).

Different factors used in the calculations are taken from the tables mentioned in IS (1893).
The applied approach is static in nature and conservative.

support

CG

(From MATWEB) (E=69GPa, For Al.) 3 3

=215kN (For Aluminium)

Conclusion Hence, from the calculations, we can see that the amount of stress coming on TMP supports (1.92MPa in shear and 0.9MPa in compression ) is very less as compared to the allowable strength of the material ,26MPa, at room temperature. (allowable strength for Aluminium is 2/3Sy or 1/3Su whichever is minimum )

References: 1. Formula for assessing the horizontal seismic load is taken from IS 1893. 3. Other dimensions of TMP and TMP support are taken from manual of the equipment.

Additional Information

Definitions
Amplification factor

The component amplification factor (ap) represents the dynamic amplification of the component relative to the fundamental period of structure. In most situations, the non-structural element may need to be designed without fundamental period of the structure being available. Further, one may need to carry out experimental studies (e.g., shake table study) to evaluate fundamental period of the non-structural element which may not be feasible.
Component response modification factor

The component response modification factor (Rp) represents ductility, redundancy, and energy dissipation capacity of the element and its attachment to the structures.
Importance factor

Importance factor is determined according to the importance of the structure. For highly important structures such as hospitals, schools, emergency buildings, structures containing hazardous materials etc the value of Ip is 1.5 otherwise it is 1.

Zone factor

According to the seismic zones ,zone factor is decided . There are I to V seismic zones defined . Ahmedabad comes in the seismic zone III.
