A SEMINAR PRESENTATION ON

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY STRATEGY

AND

IMPLEMENTATION

Factors comprising Sustainability

Why this is Required?

Demand for Energy growing very fast;

Energy shortage; Conventional Resources being degraded; Climate change, Environmental problems;

The Promotion, Development, and Implementation of Sustainable Energy Strategy is a key solution for tackling these issues.

Steps Taken.
To limit the use of Coal;
More efficient use of Energy Resources; More Stress on Nuclear Power; Financial assistance to tap Tidal and Geothermal energy options; Increased stress on building efficiency rather than on adding capacity.

Energy Mix of China

SUSTAINABLE ENERGY STRATEGIES

Promote Renewable Energy Usage

Green Buildings; Less dependence on Exhaustible Resources for domestic purposes; More Efficient use of Energy; In China, Tax on Coal is increased by four times in 2008 to check its consumption for electricity generation, while investment in wind power infrastructure and Solar power technology had been greatly enhanced. As a result, China is cutting its dependence on Coal.

Accelerate Nuclear Energy Development

Nuclear Energy is the only answer to ever expanding energy needs. Main Hurdles: Nuclear waste:- :- With the help of Accelerator
Driven Systems, small quantity of waste production as Actinides produced in reactors itself are burnt out. Anti- Nuclear Sentiments:- Need to instill confidence among people regarding the safety.

Oil Security
India imports 73% of its oil requirements, and it will go upto 85% by 2015. Hydrogen is a clean energy carrier and a fundamental measure to reduce Indias and Chinas reliance on oil and carbon dioxide emission. Core technologies of hydrogen fuel cells for both automobile and stationary uses have been developed. China is buying up oil fields or stakes in them in many parts of the World and entering into strategic alliances with global oil majors in a bid to secure its energy needs.

Enhance Energy savings and Improve Efficiency

Indias energy efficiency is fifth lowest in the world, but there is a room for substantial savings in industrial and domestic sector. Reason:- Lack of technical knowledge, awareness, lack of appropriate technologies and energy efficient devices. What can be done? facilitate shift towards Cogeneration; ban import of second hand machinery; develop domestic energy efficient technologies;

Clean Coal Technologies

Advanced high efficiency combustion; Integrated Gasification Combined Cycle [IGCC]; Fluidized bed combustion; Flue gas Desulphurization;

Implementation of Sustainable Energy Strategies in Wind Energy

Integrating turbines into existing tower structures such as utility and lighting poles; Advanced Blade design and manufacturing methods; Active pitch controls for small wind turbines to maintain energy capture at very high wind speeds; Use of permanent magnet generators instead of induction generators which enhances low wind speed start-up, also they are more compact and lighter weight generators.

Implementation of Sustainable Energy Strategies in Solar Power

Cost:- Cadmium Telluride makes PV panels cheaper;
Solar roof shingles

Highly efficient solar-concentrator design- collects more rays with thousands of small lenses on a single sheet
Giant gravel batteries- used to store energy when the sun goes down Efficiency- a coating of silica nano particles could increase the power output of PV cells

Solar Panels mounted on roofs

Implementation of Sustainable Energy Strategies in Nuclear Power

Closed fuel cycle- spent fuel of one stage is reprocessed to produce fuel for next stage, thus multiplies manifold the energy potential of fuel and greatly reduces quantity of waste generated. Advanced Heavy Water reactor:- Advanced and direct Thorium utilization, no need to convert it into Uranium 233. Advanced Nuclear Power Reactors:- more fuel efficient; inherently safer; easier to operate; less vulnerable to operational upsets; 72 hour grace period; longer operating life.

Conclusion
Effective changes of energy structure must be made in the future so as to promote worlds sustainable development. The sustainable energy strategy is addressed from various perspectives to meet the ambitious target of sustainable energy development. In order to attain a sustainable development path, Chinas overall energy strategy is striving to shift its coal-based energy system to a sustainable energy system, but India failed to achieve any noteworthy progress in the management and development of its sustainable energy strategy and more importance need to be given for the development of advanced and sustainable energy technologies and most importantly, to Implement it.
