In What Temperature Will ItA Drop Of Food Color Dye To Dissolve In A Glass Of Still Water and Milk

Daniel Guerrero 4th Grade

PURPOSE
The purpose of this experiment was going to be to figure out what happens to the food color dye when when it is added to the following different temperatures of water and milk: cold water, warm water, hot water, cold milk, warm milk, and hot milk.

HYPOTHESIS
For my hypothesis, I think that the food dye will dissolve and travel the fastest in hot milk because the temperature of the milk will dissolve the food dye the fastest, which will make it easier for the dye to spread throughout the cup and you will see more of a drastic change with milk since it is white.

VARIABLES

Manipulated Variable: Amount of pressure that is used to release the food dye into the water and milk from dropper. Responding Variable: Each droplet will vary in size, this will causes an increase or decrease in the amount of drops it takes for water or milk to change colors. Controlled Variable: The amount of milk and water placed in each cup, which is 8 fl ounces, and the color of the food color dye.

RESULTS
In this experiment, there was three attempts per each temperature of water and milk. I concluded that the overall experimental results had a average of 5 to 30 seconds per cup, except for cold and warm milk because the food dye did not dissolve. -Cold water had an average of 15 to 20 seconds. -Warm water had an average of 5 to 10 seconds. -Hot water had an average of 10 to 15 seconds. -Hot milk had an average of 20 to 30 seconds.

CONCLUSION
When conducting this experiment, the main purpose was to try and figure out what would occur when food dye was added to three different temperature of milk and water. The purpose was fulfilled because it was concluded through my data and observations that my hypothesis was wrong. At the beginning, my hypothesis was that the food dye will dissolve and travel the fastest in hot milk because the temperature of the milk will dissolve the food dye the fastest, which will make it easier for the dye to spread throughout the cup and you will see more of a drastic change with milk since it is white. However, I was wrong, the experiment showed that in warm water, the food color dye traveled and dissolved the fastest, NOT in hot milk. This can understood better by seeing my data tables, graphs, and pictures. In the end, this experiment taught how volume increases and decreases in temperature.

ABSTRACT
The purpose this experiment is going to be to figure out what happens to the food when it is that added to the following different temperatures of water and milk. As milk and water are heated up, the volume will increase, but the weight did not. Volume is the space that a object occupies. All the plastic cups used in this experiment were added 3 drops of food dye. The timer was set for 1 minute. The results of this experiment varied, because of the pressure, distance, and position the dropper was held in , also, the temperature of the water and milk. The results of the experiment showed that the average was 5 to 30 second for the dye to travel through either the milk or the water. Overall, the results concluded that food dye affects water and milk in everyday cooking needs.

MATERIALS

6 clear plastic or glass cups labeled: cold water, warm water, hot water, cold milk, warm milk, and hot milk. 24 fluid ounce of milk 24 fluid ounces of water Timer/ Stop-watch

Food Dye Color

Dropper Thermometer, to make sure all the three milks and water are in different temperatures.

DATA
*This chart shows the results of the experiment that was conducted per trial of each of the different temperatures of water and milk in seconds.

STEPS & PROCEDURES

Gather 6 clear or glass cups Label each of the cups with the following names: cold water, warm water, hot water, cold milk, warm milk, and hot milk Place milk and water in the microwave for 25 seconds, this will be your warm water and milk Place milk and water in the microwave for 60 seconds, this will be your hot water and milk Place 8 fluid ounces into each corresponding cup Align cups in a straight line facing towards you

Add three drops of food color dye into each cup, one at a time, and using your timer, time the speed at which the color dye travel through the milk and water.
Record your information Repeat step #7 three times, each time recording the results Clean-up after experiment
