Movement of Plant

Movement of plant such as truck, backhoe etc. can cause dust. Pave and water haul roads for access and egress at construction site to control dust. Ensure there is no health risk or loss of amenity due to emission of dust to the environment.

In the construction site, the environmental technologies to be considered are:

a) b) c)

Reduce, reuse and recycle Sewage treatment Solid waste management

d) Air pollution control Advanced Construction System DCC 4133 Environmental e) Noise pollution control 4/19/12 Technology

Three key factors when thinking about how to recycle The 3Rs:

a) Reduce, reuse and recycle

Recycling is very important as waste has negative impact on the natural environment.

Harmful chemicals and greenhouse gasses are released from rubbish in landfill sites. Recycling helps to reduce the pollution caused by waste.

Habitat destruction and global warming are some the affects caused by deforestation. Recycling reduces the need for raw materials so that the rainforests can be 4/19/12

a) Reduce, reuse and Recycle - Wood recycle

Type of wood can currently be recycled:

Wood can often be reused to make other items, such as a bird table for your garden. Wood can often be added to your compost heap, such as sawdust and wood shavings.

What happens to the wood collected?

b) Sewage Treatment

Sewage is characterized in terms of its physical, chemical and biological composition. Sewage Physical Properties : Colour, Odor, Solids, Temperature. The sewage has to be treated before discharged into the rivers. The constituents in the sewage could decrease the river water quality.

d) Air Pollution Control

Air pollution is the introduction of chemicals, particulate matter, or biological materials that cause harm or discomfort to humans or other living organisms, or damages the natural environment into the atmosphere. The air quality in Malaysia is described in terms of Air Pollutant Index (API).

The API is an indicator of air quality and was developed based on scientific assessment to indicate in an easily understood manner, the presence of pollutants and its Advanced Construction System impact on health. DCC 4133 Environmental 4/19/12 Technology

d) Air Pollution Control

The API system of Malaysia closely follows the Pollutant Standard Index (PSI) developed by the United States Environmental Protection Agency (US-EPA).

e) Noise Pollution Control

Noise pollution (or environmental noise) is displeasing human, animal or machine-created sound that disrupts the activity or balance of human or animal life. The word noise comes from the Latin word nausea meaning seasickness. Section 23 under The Environmental Quality Act 1974 stipulates that : No person shall, unless licensed, emit or cause or permit to be emitted any noise greater in volume, intensity or quality in contravention of the acceptable conditions specified under section 21.

e) Noise Pollution Control

Piling works is common job for the construction of multi-storey building, and bridge. The noise pollution happen during the piling works. Some of the complaint of the piling works are neglected because of the noise is not consistent. The exposure to the piling works for days at a long time could lead to the hearing problems. Therefore the construction workers have to make a proper piling schedule in order to control the noise pollution.

Construction Workers & Environmental technologies

Construction workers spend most of their time at construction site. Therefore it is the job of the construction workers to ensure that they have a clean environment. Under direct supervision of a mentoring Field Technician or Project Manager, construction workers assist in carrying out Site Management and/or Waste Management fieldrelated activities such as sampling, surveying, collection and measuring etc. This involves collecting information regarding the presence and effects of pollutants in air, water and soil of the construction site.
