Emerging nanotechologies in building and construction

What is Nanotechnology?
Nanotechnology is the art and science of manipulating matter at the nanoscale One nanometre (nm) is one billionth of a metre, or one millionth of a millimetre. A human hair is 80,000nm thick. A red blood cell is 5,000nm in diameter. A DNA molecule is 2.5nm wide. 10 hydrogen atoms arranged side by side measure 1nm.

NANOTECHNOLOGY IN CONSTRUCTION

Nanomaterials in Construction
Strong industry interest in use of nanostructured materials to improve service life and flammability performance of building materials Lack of measurement science capability to predict service life and flammability performance of nanostructured materials. Measurement science research is critical to enable U.S. construction industry to innovate and respond to global competition and new environmental regulations

NANOTECHNOLOGY IN CONCRETE
Concrete is a mixture of cement, sand(fine aggregate),

coarse aggregate and water. As concrete is most usable material in construction industry its been require to improve its quality. Nanotechnology can modify the molecular structure of concrete material to improve the material properties.

Concrete is the most important structural material.

Because of that, concrete must be durable.

If we dont use steel or iron, how can

concrete be durable

In Istanbul University, theres a running to set up Magnetic Field Laboratory

Because of magnetism, we can not use steel or iron in our concrete. Carbon Nanotubes can take the place of steel and iron. While concrete is stronger, at the same time we preserve laboratory from damage of magnetism.

Nano silica and clinker used to increase densification and hence mechanical properties and durability of cementitious materials. Service life can be doubled through the use of nano-additive viscosity enhancers which reduce diffusion of harmful agents in concrete (patent pending). Photocatalytic TiO2 added to concrete to reduce carbon monoxide and NOx emissions on roadways.

Cuore concrete is the first nano product that replaced the

micro silica with nano silica. Cuore concrete surpassed the expectations of its design and gave concrete not only the high initial and final resistance but in addition, plasticity, impermeability, and cement savings of up to 40%. Also, it lowered the levels of environmental contamination.

In addition, a liter bottle of Cuore concrete equals a whole barrel of micro silica, extra cement and super plasticizers. If before a 2 meters thick beam was required to hold a bridge correctly, now only 75 cm are required. If before 28 days were necessary in order to achieve compressive strengths of 80MPa, now only 1 day is required.

What is actually happening?

At the nanoscale, the physical, chemical, and biological properties of materials differ in fundamental and valuable ways from the properties of individual atoms and molecules or bulk matter. At the nanoscale, the classical mechanics of the everyday cross over into the quantum mechanics of the nano-world

Why Use a Nanomaterial?

Conventional materials are not optimal
Need enhanced acoustic value Need thinner material, less bulk Need translucency Need enhanced thermal value Need lighter weight

Can a nanomaterial solve the problem?

Are there risks? Do the enhanced performance characteristics provide new opportunities? Where can one locate the materials and manufacturers?

TiO2: is a white pigment and can be used as an excellent reflective coating. hydrophilic and therefore gives self cleaning properties to surfaces to which it is applied from concrete to glass. anti-fogging coatings or self-cleaning windows.

Carbon Nanotubes
Heralded as one of the Top ten advances in materials science over the last 50 years, Materials Today, 2008. Sales of carbon nanotubes projected to exceed $2B, >103 metric tons annually in the next 4 - 7 years. Major use electronics and composites.
Enhanced strength, stiffness and toughness without added weight Improved durability Increased functionality Reduced flammability

Carbon Nano Tubes(CNT):

Carbon nanotubes are a form of carbon that was first discovered in 1952 in Russia (and mostly ignored) and then re-discovered in the 1990s in Japan. They are cylindrical in shape, as shown in figure below, and their name comes from their nanometre diameter. They can be several millimetres in length and can have one layer or wall (single walled nanotube) or more than one wall (multi walled nanotube). The Production cost of nanotubes is high and the price ranges from 20 to 1000 per gram depending on quality . It is being used to strengthen and monitor concrete.

Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) as a proxy for polymeric chemical admixtures . Can remarkably improve mechanical durability by gluing concrete mixtures. Cementitious agents and concrete aggregates. Prevent crack propagation. Nano and microscale sensors and actuators are implanted in construction structures for accurate real-time monitoring of Material/structural damage Health (e.g., cracking, corrosion., wear, and stress) Environmental conditions (e.g., moisture, temperature, Smoke).

NANO-SILICA
In 2004, Lab tests and production tests proved that the nano silica did not contaminate, but it also produced better results than micro silica, and a liter bottle of the product was equivalent to a barrel full of micro silica, extra cement and super plasticizing additives.

High Strength Steel Cables

High strength bolt

American Iron and Steel Institute and the U.S. Navy started to develop new, low carbon, high performance steel (HPS) for bridges in 1992 [10]. The new steel was developed with higher corrosion-resistance and weld ability by incorporating copper nanoparticles from at the steel grain boundaries. Sandvik NanoflexTM is new stainless steel with ultra-high strength, good formability, and a good surface finish developed by Sandvik Nanoflex Materials Technology. Due to its high performance, Sandvik NanoflexTM is suitable for application which requires lightweight and rigid designs. Its good corrosion and wear resistance can keep life-cycle costs low. Attractive or wear resistant surfaces can be achieved by various treatments (Sandvik Nanoflex Materials Technology).

MMFX2 is nanostructure modified steel, produced by MMFX Steel Corp. Compared with the conventional steel, it has a fundamentally different microstructure- a laminated lath structure resembling plywood. This unique structure provides MMFX2 steel with amazing strength (three times stronger), ductility, toughness, and corrosion resistance. Due to high cost, the stainless steel reinforcement in concrete structure is limited in high risk environments. The MMFX2 steel could be an alternative because it has the similar corrosion resistance to that of stainless steel, but at a much lower cost (MMFX Steel Corp.).

AWARDING NANOTECHNOLOGIC PAINT: NANSULATE

BUILDER news Magazine 2008 Best Product Winner - "Energy Efficiency" category. Ultra Thin Industrial Grade High Performance Protective Insulation Coating.

Nansulate is the first isolation paint in the world. It is introduced in 2004. It provides heat isolation with very thin layer. It's possible decreasing heat from 100 C to 70 C also thin as 200 micron layer. It's impossible to do this work with traditional methods.

The suggested thickness of layer for the buildings is 200 micron.

The product shows full performance in two months.

Its more expensive than ordinary paint but if we assume that product as a isolation material, its cheapest method for jacketing.

Physical appearance of this paint is like a glass.

It provides heat and corrosion isolation.

There is no space in materials. So it is durable to external factors.

Because of configuration of paint, oxygen doesnt affect to internal structure. By this way we protect our materials from corrosion.

This isolation paint can be applicable to steel, aluminum and other different metal surfaces. This application procures perfect adherence on steel, aluminum, PVC, fiberglass, wood, concrete, plastic and much more surfaces.

You can clean easily. You just need water and soap.

Optionally can be painted.(Other colors)

High heat range between -40 C and 240 C

Least 10% energy saving.
