COURSE OVERVIEW (COURSE PRO FORMA)

Learning Outcomes
State the purpose of lesson planning and important aspects to be considered in lesson planning. Prepare a yearly and weekly lesson plans. Write learning objectives and learning outcomes for science lesson. Practice specific teaching skills through micro-teaching

Learning Outcomes (cont.)

Conduct macro teaching for specified topic in the Primary School Science Curriculum.

Lesson Plan
As a teacher why is it important to plan a lesson?

Why do teachers need to have their yearly lesson plan for each the subject they teach?

The purposes for lesson planning:

to identify the scope of the teaching based on the syllabus to identify the sequence of the teaching to identify suitable teaching strategies and activities

The purposes for lesson planning (cont.)

to identify suitable science process skills and manipulative skills to identify the total time required (usually the number of weeks) to identify the point at which evaluation will be carried out

The purposes for lesson planning (cont.)

to allow continuity of the lesson even if the teacher is not present to identify relevant teaching aids and materials required and to make purchase of them in advance if they are not available in school

In writing a yearly lesson plan or scheme.consider :

the total number of weeks available for teaching taking into consideration the number of days that will have to deducted for school and public holidays. Identify the content areas for the entire year and divide them into two parts so that each of the parts can be carried out in the two semesters available.

Yearly lesson plan..(cont.)

Identify the learning objectives and the learning outcomes associated with each learning objectives Identify suitable teaching strategies that you will use for each subtopic or sub skill.

Alsop (2003) suggests that a yearly scheme should act as a basis for what is to be taught and should make clear and show the sequence for the skills, content and concepts. Factors involved in designing a scheme of work is shown in the following figure (Alsop, 2003):

WHAT IS A DAILY LESSON PLAN?

.. written by science teachers to convey a unit of information, concept, or skill to his students in an effective way during a period of time, such as 40 to 45 minutes duration. The information that can be found - the topic, aims, learning objectives, teaching methods, lesson content and teaching procedures. It is important for the teacher to prepare the daily lesson plan beforehand to ascertain that the teaching and learning process take place in an efficient and effective way.
