Tourism industry is one of the largest and fastest growing economic sectors in the world, aided by globalisation among other factors. Over the years, many new destinations have emerged alongside the traditional ones of Europe and North America.
International tourist arrivals grew from 939m in 2010 to 980m in 2011 at an estimate of 4.4% increase; and is expected to continue in 2012 to hit the 1billion mark.

A total of 150 countries were monitored and virtually all destinations reported data on tourist arrivals for 2011. 125 (83%) showed positive figures 25 (17%) had negative results 52 (35%) had double digits

Europe lead in the regional performance with +6% growth while South America ranked best by category of sub-regions with +10% growth.

World tourist arrival growth was 41m in 2011 Europe accounted for over 50% at 28m mostly from:

Central Europe with 8% Eastern Europe with 8% Southern Mediterranean with 8%

Some reasons for tourism in Europe include :

Growth was higher in advanced economies (+5%) than in emerging economies most of which was accorded to Europes strong results. Events that characterised 2011 among others include:
Major political changes in the middle east and North Africa (Arab spring) The March 12 2011 Japan Tsunami Stalled global economic recovery

International tourism receipt for 2010 was $919bn while the figure for 2011 is yet to be released.
Receipts among the world top 10 destinations:
USA with +12% UK (+7%).

Hong Kong-China +25% Spain (+9%)

Top spenders were China (an emerging source market) + 38%, Brazil (+32%), India (+32%) and Russia (+21%). The traditional markets followed with USA having +5% and Germany +4% growth each.

A review of the trends show that tourism has continued to grow as a major economic backbone for several countries of the world. Europe has maintained its top position in world tourists arrivals 6 of Europe countries have remained on the world top 10 receipts chart while gradually recovering from the fall in receipts of 2010.
