What is Nanotechnology?
Nanotechnology commonly known as NANOTECH in short. Nanotechnology is the study of manipulating matter on an atomic and molecular level molecular self assembly. It deals with molecular self assembly.

Why Nanotechnology or Nanotech?

The word Nano is mainly originated from nanometer. Nanometer is the unit of length in metric system.

1 nanometer (nm) equal to one billionth of a meter. (1/1000000000 of a meter , or 0.000000001 m , 109 nm)

Origin Nanotechnology
Buckminsterfullerene C60, also known as the buckyball.

It is a representative member of the carbon structures known as fullerenes.

Nanotechnology is a relatively recent development in scientific research and still under development.

Area of Physics involved?

Nanoelectronics.
Nanomechanics. Nanophotonics. Nanoionics.

Molecular self assembly

Molecular self assembly is a synthetic chemistry to create small molecular almost any structure.

The basic principal to create the molecular

structure is based Watson-Crick base paring of DNA strand.

Application in day today life

Titanium dioxide in sunscreen, cosmetics, surface coatings. Carbon allotropes used to produce gecko tapes.
Silver in food packaging, clothing, disinfectants. Zinc oxide in sunscreens and cosmetics, surface coatings, paints and outdoor furniture varnishes

Health & environmental concern

Nanoparticles products may have unintended consequences.
Silver nanoparticles destroys beneficial

bacteria with help in decomposing organic matter. There are a risk of nanoparticles or nanotubes being released during disposal, destruction and recycling. Asbestos nanoparticles causes bronchitis.
