Parts of a Plant Cell

1. Cell Wall The outermost part of a plant cell. It is a hard wall that is made up of many sugars ( polysaccharides). It helps the cell maintain its shape and it protects the cell.

2. Cell Membrane Every cell is enclosed by a membrane. The cell membrane is a double layer of lipids (lipid bi-layer) and is also made of proteins. The cell membrane allows materials in and out of the cell.

3. Nucleus (membrane bound) The nucleus contains the DNA and directs the cells activities.

4. Nuclear Envelope - A membrane that surrounds and protects the nucleus.

5. Chromatin - Thin strands in the nucleus that contain genetic material.

6. Nucleolus This is where the ribosomes are made.

7. Cytoplasm The cytoplasm is the soup inside the cell. The cytoplasm is made mostly of proteins and water. The cell communicates through the cytoplasm.

8. Mitochondrion Converts carbohydrates to energy for the cell.

9. Endoplasmic Reticulum (membrane bound) It carries material from one part of the cell to another.

10. Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum This part of the ER contains ribosomes that were made in the nucleolus. This is the site of protein production.

11. Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum This part of the ER lacks ribosomes and is the site of lipid production.

12. Ribosomes These are found on the RER and throughout the cell. Ribosomes are factories that assemble proteins.

13. Golgi Body This receives material from the ER for packaging and distributes them to other parts of the cell (the mail room).

14. Chloroplasts Large green structures that contain chlorophyll and is the site of photosynthesis. They produce food (carbohydrates) for the cell.

15. Vaculoes Large storage area in the cell where food, water, and/or waste is stored.

16. Cytoskeleton Protein fibers that aid in the internal movement of cell organelles, as well as muscle fiber contraction.

17. Centrosome Aids in cell division.

18. Lysosomes Small round structures that contain chemicals that aid in breaking down large food particles into smaller particles.
