What is Anatomy?

The study of the structure of the body parts and their relationships to one another. It is the study of the physical characteristics of body structures. How they feel, What they look like. Three types

Microscopic Macroscopic - referred to as GROSS Developmental

What is Physiology?
The study of how ALL of the body parts work and carry out their life-sustaining processes. Focuses on events at the molecular and cellular level. An understanding of physiology depends heavily on the principals of physics and chemical reactions.

Anatomical Positioning & Body Terminology

What is the Anatomical Position?

Body is erect Feet are spread slightly apart Toes are pointed forward Head faces forward Arms down at each side Palms facing forward

Anterior / Ventral = Front Posterior / Dorsal = Back Superior / Cranial = Toward the Head Inferior / Caudal = Toward the Feet Medial = Toward the Middle Lateral = Toward the Side Proximal = Close to the trunk of the body (Relative to the appendages.) Distal = Away from the trunk of the body (Relative to the appendages.) Superficial = Toward the Surface Deep = Toward the Inside

Directional Terms

Ex. The nose is superior to the mouth. Ex. The Kidneys are deep to the Small Intestines. Ex. The fingers are distal to the elbow.

Your Assignment!!
Create a story using a minimum of 15 vocabulary words. If you use a term more than once, you will only get credit for it one time. The story must make sense. With the vocabulary word, your story must lend itself so that the reader without any anatomy background can tell whats going on.

Example Story
While walking home from school, there was a crack in the side walk. I did not see the crack and I fell twisting my tarsal. Upon x-ray, the doctor was able to see that I in-fact broke my ankle. A week later, a loud bang woke me from a deep sleep. I rolled over and jumped out of bed hitting my frontal on the nightstand. I had to go to the emergency room where I received 18 stitches in my forehead.
