Situation
Me and my friend often play on games consoles such as playstation and Xbox, and my friend has told me that he is getting bored of his game room/lounge and says its dull . But he cant find anything in the shops that fits his style room or that is cheap enough so he has asked me to make something to liven his room up and make it more exciting, and he also wants it to be cheap to make, eye catching and attractive.

Brief
I am going to design and make a clock for my friends game room it must fit in with the style of the room, and liven up and make the room more exciting, also it will be cheap to make, eye catching, attractive and different to anything else in the stores.

initial Specification
My clock must be: Cheap to make Attractive Eye catching Stand up on its own or be wall mounted Unique

Existing products wall clocks

I like this clock because it is digital, big and bold very clear and it is a bit unusual

This clock I really like it because the design is simplistic and the huge 12 and 6 stand out a lot which adds to the over look of the clock

I like this clock because it is very unusual and I like the big elongated hands and the small face.

This clock is ok I like that it is made out of glass but apart from that it is a bit boring.

I like this clock because it is simple and I like the grain in the wood

This clock is ok but I like the spike type things coming out of the clock.

Major project: Matt Berry

Existing products mantel clocks

Back to contents page

I like this clock because it looks like you can see all of the parts moving inside.

I dont like this clock it appears to be simple and drab to me it is all a bit plain.

I like this clock because I like all of the gears and that it is between two pieces of glass makes it look even better.

This clock is quite unusual because it is round and it has a square front on it and I like that

This clock is really boring and I dont like it because its just a normal round clock

I dont really like this clock because It is old fashion.

Major project: Matt Berry

Existing products pendulum clocks

Back to contents page

I dont really like this clock because of the old time look and the really small pendulum

This clock is ok I like the glass effect and the squares frosted for the numbers.

I like this clock . I like the mirror and the roman numerals.

I think this clock looks good I like the piece of wood at the back of the clock and the polished metal.

I think this clock looks good I like the gears that it is made out of.

I dont really like this clock it just looks a bit cheep and tacky.

This product was the best clock to come out of my c.a.f.e.q.u.e. now I will analyse it to see why it won It only cost 20 a very reasonable price.

A mirror for the face.

The whole clock is a retro and simple look.

The small face add to the retro look and the chrome metal hands

The frosted glass makes the number stand out. The big over sized hands give it a retro look.

There are bigger frosted circles for the numbers 12, 3 ,6 ,9.

The hands are 38 cm long

Environment research

Back to contents page This is a room just devoted to play station so it isn't exactly what the room I'm making the product for is like. It is a very sleek room with a very big TV for a focal point. And the simple rectangular seats are a part of the modern look. The drapes on the walls seem like they should just be there. And with the balls hanging from from the ceiling add again to the sleek modern look.

This is exactly the style of my environment it is a family game/lounge room with a pool table as a focal point. It has a red top cloth to suit with the brown leather suite and the dark wood cabinet. The style of this room is relaxing because of all the big chairs and the plain walls there not over powering.

The style of This room is homely it just seems comfortable because the lighting is calm and pleasant. And with the plain walls and to the affect also also the wood furniture like the TV cabinet and the draws also add to the look but the big sofa bed chair doesnt seem to fit the feel and style of the room.

The bottom two environments are like what I will be making my clock. When I make it I will consider using darker woods or darkening the wood to make it suit the style of the environment.

research clock hands

These are some different styles of clock hands Some of these hands style would suit my clock but not all of them will Dislikes I don't like style a because of the old style look and all of the spikes and curves Style d I don't like because it has a huge circles at the bottom and the top of the hands with the squares and line dont seem to match. Style b I dont like because its seems like a very slim market for that style and again the huge circles at the bottom dont seem to match the rest of the style Likes I like c because it is a modern look that you could put a wide variety of clocks

Style a 3/10

Style b 4/10

Style c 8/10

Style d 2/10

Stylee 9/10

Style f 8/10

In my clock design I am going to use a style similar to c, e, f because I think they are the most versatile styles and they are the styles of clock I am going to design.

Style e and style f are very similar and I could see them on a lot of clocks because they are simple and versatile

research clock numbers

These examples of clock numbers

Back to contents page

some of these numbers I like and some I dont. there are a range of styles of numbers roman numerals, lines, normal numbers, l.e.d.s dots or numbers and dots.

Dislikes
i dont like the roman numerals with the circles because I dont think they go together . The triangle ones are a selected style and wont go on a lot o clocks Likes I like the l.e.d.s because I think it will look good and you could get different colours to match your colour of the clock I like the rectangles because they are versatile and they could go with a lot of styles I like the roman numerals but they may not fit on to a lot of styles of clocks I like The circles because look very modern and simple design 5/10 9/10 4/10 8/10 7/10

7/10

In my clock design I will use the l.e.d.s, the rectangles or the circles but in my interview the numbers have to be suited to the clock style, so I will decide when I know what my clock looks like.

Major project: Matt Berry

Clock face colours

Back to contents page

The colour of the face and numbers depends on the style and the theme of the clock. The colours that will look the best are the bolder ones like black and white. Likes Number 1 is a big contrast a very dark back but a very light white which gives off a very good effect. 3 is a good contrast and there for looks good so it is easy on the eye to see. Number 6 isn't a huge contrast because they are similar colours but with a light yellow and a darker orange it looks good.

Dislikes Number 2 seems a bit hard on the eyes because the dark background and with a darkish number. 4 is again 2 dark colours and they clash and it doesnt look good. Also number 5 clashes and is harsh on the eye and that shade of red seems to be a bad shade to use. The best colours to use I think are two colours that are contrasting but not just in colour it could be in the shade of the colour as well.

Major project: Matt Berry

Ergonomics

Back to contents page Viewing distance The viewing distance is a vital part of a clock as it is all dependant on how big the information on the clock is. For a larger viewing distance you will have to have bigger numbers or symbols and they will not have to be to detailed. So therefore maximum display viewing distance should be determined by the size of details shown on a display. The reading distance for displays is usually 300-750mm, as many displays have to be read at arm's length and must allow you to reach or adjust controls. Displays must be optimally positioned within your field of view.

Illumination Displays may have their own internal or back-lighting, but if not, their design should be suited to the lowest expected lighting level. So if the clock was on a wall it would be illuminated better if it was on a table but then you could use extra illumination like having l.e.d.s for the numbers.

Angle of view The preferred angle of view for displays (the angle at which the display plane is positioned with regard to the person monitoring it) should be 90 degrees. This is especially important with large picture displays as positioning them at an angle may cause parts of the display to be hidden from your eyes.

Materials research
Perspex

Back to contents page

Perspex is a very high impact material and is very strong and robust material.this material will not shatter or scratch very easily. There are very little breakages associated with it. Also it is half the weight of glass with the same thickness.

Wood
There are lots of types of wood with each having there own qualities. Such as colour, strength, weight and ease of working. other advantages of wood are that it will readily take a wide range of finishes just as paints, vanishes, stains and waxes. It also has a large amount of ways it can be joined, screwed, nailed, jointed and glued.

Metal
As with wood There are lots of types of metal with each having there own qualities. Such as they are good conductor of electricity, heat and strong. Also there are a wide range of alloys available for special purposes just as the air craft industry. Metal is also harder to work than wood and often specialised tools and machinery are required.as with wood there are a lot of ways metal can be joined such as welding, soldering, riveting and bolting Plastic Plastic comes in a wide variety of colours styles like solid colour translucent colour and clear. They can also be bent and formed into any shape.the two mane types of plastic are thermosetting and thermoplastics. Thermosetting can only be heated up and shaped once but thermoplastics can be heated shaped and reheated and reshaped.

Research analysis
The analysis of Existing products

Back to contents page

When I was looking at the existing products I learned about the different styles of my product and what I think makes a good clock and what makes a bad clock by evaluating each clock. By taking I clock of each style and running them through a c.a.f.e.q.u.e. I found out not just what is a good clock but why it is a good clock. Interview

The interview is a main source of where I got my information for my specification for. When I asked the questions I used the information to know what the customer wants from this clock.
Environment I knew what environment my product was going to be in and I evaluated each one to see what qualities my product would need to have to fit in with the environment, by looking at the materials used in that room, what furniture was used. And from this I got some ideas of what my clock would have to look like. Aesthetical research In this part of the research I had to look at the colours of the numbers compared to the colour of the back ground, the clock hands and the clock numbers. I picked a wide range of clock hands and with keeping my environment in consideration I decided what style of hands would best fit that environment. i have chosen a simpler look witch I think gives a better look. with the colours it made me see that contrasting colours work well but not if they are to dark. With the clock numbers I had a wide variety of dots, lines, roman numerals and l.e.ds but keeping in line of my specification I had to use the l.e.ds which I think looks good and was the best choice for this type of clock. Material research The materials research helped me learn about all of the different characteristics of the materials how easy they are to work what I can to with them and ways of joining them all this will help me what materials are best for what job in my design Ideas. Ergonomics with the ergonomics it helped me to see how big my numbers will have to be, how big my clock will have to be so we can see it properly and that it can been seen from all angles. All of these aspects I will take into account when designing my clock

I like this idea because you could put it on the wall or make a frame for it. But I might put a net on it instead of a tube and this would suit the environment very well, because it is a bit out of the ordinary and is a bit of fun not just a clock.

I think this Idea is a good one and will fit the environment quite well, but it will be very hard to make. Also putting the clock mechanism in and reaching it to adjust the time will be hard to do.

Developing initial ideas

Back to contents page

This is my pool table idea which was a initial idea, and I went on to develop this idea because it is the most suited clock for a games room.

I developed my pool table idea into this idea. I think it is a good idea, but I think that I could be made better with more developing. I think I will keep the outer triangle because it is a associated with pool and that is associated with games rooms, And it gives it a classic look.

Major project: Matt Berry

Developed idea
The clear face has round coloured circles stuck to the back of it to imitate pool balls

Back to contents page The clear plastic slots into the triangle with a routered edge

Clock will be wall mounted

Clock mechanism is stuck on the back of the clear sheet

A pool triangle with a clear plastic face on it

This is how I would make the triangle corners

The clock has l.e.d.s so it can been seen

The triangle made from wood The size will be the actual size of a pool triangle

There will be green cloth on the inside back piece to give the elusion that it is on a pool table

This design is a developed idea from my previous idea. I like everything on it I would have to investigate into the different types of joints for the corners. The l.e.d.s would be wired up in series and I might put a switch in so the l.e.d.s are not on all the time. Giving the elusion real balls being in the triangle might be a challenge so I could use real balls like ping pong balls and spray paint them but the clock module arm for the hands might not be long enough.

Major project: Matt Berry

Developing joints

Back to contents page

These are two different joints I was thinking of using the first one is already on my design and the second is a development on the first joint is an ok joint but there is a lot of wood in the corner bit holding it together which looks horrible and it would look out of proportion to the rest of the triangle because the arms are thin and the corners are so big. also it isn't the best looking joint. When I was putting it together I found it hard to clamp it up because they kept on slipping off due to the shape and the type of joint.

The second joint I like a lot more than the first on. First it looks a lot nicer, I would be simpler to make and there is less wood in the corner so it would fit the balls in better, and it looks s lot better. also there is less wood holding it altogether but that doesnt matter much because the triangle will not be under much strain. i found it very easy to put it together when I was making it due to design of the joint. In my final product I will laser cut the triangle out so then there will be no need for joints.

Major project: Matt Berry

Cardboard model
This is what my would look like with the balls and clock module on but there will be green cloth on the back behind the pool balls. this model is not to scale

l.e.d.s but Im not sure what colour I'm going to use

Stickers 2 inches in diameter

When making my model, I found out that I would not be able to use stickers I would have to use circles of plastic but then the problem with that is the gap between the bottom of the hands to the clock module might be to small for the thickness of plastic.

Major project: Matt Berry

redeveloping ideas
wood circles

Back to contents page The triangle will laser cut as 1 whole triangle

The clock module will been glued to the back of the piece of wood A strip of wood will be glued along each inside edge I will also add a switch for the l.e.d.s I am still having l.e.d.s on my design

Green cloth

The triangle will not have a back so you can access the clock module

This is how the wood will be secured

A thin piece of triangular wood will slot in side of the triangle

3mm thick circles will be stuck on to the wood In this design I redeveloped my design because I had some problems with the pool ball stickers and I learnt that I can laser cut the triangle so there was no need for joints. But I will still have l.e.d.s on my design and a switch to turn them on and off so it doesn't waist energy. So overall I think that this is a better idea than my previous one and now I will go on to model this idea in prodesktop. Major project: Matt Berry

Holes will be cut out of the green cloth where the circles will be to ovoid adding any extra thickness

The triangle will be 1 inch thick

Green cloth will be stuck on to the wood

Design ideas hands

Minute hand

These are some hand designs for my clock, I will annotate each design say what I like about them and Back to contents page what I dont like and give each design a mark out of 10 Pool cues

This design is a simple clock hand design but it is still better than a boring square one and it is very relevant to the product.

Bottom half of a snooker cue

Half a snooker cue

The x shaped snooker tool This I think is a unusual idea because it is not the cue it self but it is the tools u get when you play pool. But it may be very hard to cut this out as it would have to be quite small 7/10

This is another pool cue design but the cue is split in half like a snooker cue I think it is a good idea and it looks good. But I think the design above it looks better because some people might not realise what it is . 8/10 I like this idea a lot as it is the balls on top of each other not the cues. But as I am having pool balls on my design it may not look very good and they may be to wide to tell the time. It may also be to heavy for the mechanism to hold up the hands. 8/10

The spider pool tool yellow Red etc.

On my final design I will use some thing along the lines of the first design as this came out as the best idea but it depends on the clock module because it is week and may not be able toMajor project: Matt Berry support the hands.

Materials research : wood Back to contents page Plywood

Plywood is a man made wood made from thin sheets of wood veneer, called plies or veneers. The layers are glued together, each with its grain at right angles to adjacent layers for greater strength. There is usually a odd number of veneers to prevent warping. It is made by the layers being bonded together under heat and pressure with the use of strong adhesive. A common reason for using plywood instead of plain wood is its resistance to cracking, shrinkage, twisting/warping, and it has a good amount of strength.

Ash

The wood is a hardwood, tough and very strong but elastic, extensively used for making bows, tool handles and quality wooden baseball bats, and other uses demanding high strength and resilience. Ash veneers are extensively used in office furniture as it is very attractive and cheaper than a solid table. It also makes excellent firewood. The two most economically important species for wood production are White Ash in eastern North America, and European Ash in Europe.

Finishes
There are lots of finishes for wood some of them consist of wax which creates a shin on the surface of the material but provides little or no protection at all, and it needs to be reapplied as it wears off. It needs to be buffed and can easily taken off with solvents. Another finish is varnish. It takes many coats to get a good effect and makes the wood look like it has a plastic effect. It provides a very good protection against may substances, and is very durable. it needs to be applied carefully not to leave streaks. All so wood stain can be applied, it varies from thin and thick and can come in a variety of different colours. Some completely cover the grain and some merely make the wood a darker colour.

Major project: Matt Berry

Materials research : plastic

Back to contents page

There are two main types of plastic. Thermosetting plastics and thermoplastics. Thermosetting plastics can only be heated up and moved once. Once the plastic has cooled down it will not be able to be reheated and moved again. Where thermoplastics can be heated moved then cooled, and reheated and moved again. The type of plastic that my school uses is acrylic.

Thermoplastics
A thermoplastic is a plastic that melts to a liquid when heated and freezes to a brittle, very glassy state when cooled sufficiently.

Acrylic
Acrylic the most common acrylic plastic is polymethyl methacrylate it is a thermoplastic which is very cheap and Light but strong plastic. Which is Widely available in sheet form. it is used for a wide variety of applications like school projects like vacuum forming because it softens at about 95C. it is available in a wide variety of colours and thickness.

Finishes
due to the make up and the characteristics of plastic there are not many finishes for plastic. The only ones there are is polish, it makes the plastic look shiny and will be best applied by a buffer but provides no protection at all. Wire wool can be applied to make the edges a lot smoother and rounded but again provides no protection at all. Another method of finishing plastic is a antistatic finish it is a cream of a spray that prevents dust attraction. But this is usually a specialist finish and should only be applied where dust would cause a problem.

plastic balls and back My project was split into two separate parts the wooden triangle and the plastic balls and back. I cut the plastic balls and the triangle out using a laser cutter I used this because it was a lot easier, faster and delivered better quality work than any person could ever do it was the best material to use in every factor like cost, ease of machining and the overall look of it once I cut the balls and the triangle out I decided to stick the balls on with double sided tape because it give the exact same overall look and took much less time than plastic glue which allowed me to get on with the other aspects of my project.

wooden triangle with the wooden triangle I had problems getting the right piece of wood I wanted so I had to use 15mm plywood and cut two triangles out and glue them with pva glue. I cut it out on the cnc machine because of the same reasons that I used the laser cutter to cut out the plastic. I allowed the glue to dry over the weekend and then I sanded the inside and out side down until it was smooth. When the inside was smooth I glued in some square wooden dowel like in my design. After the wood has dried, I put the plastic triangle into the wooden triangle to check its fit. I had to adjust it slightly but it fitted in there very good. After that I sanded the triangle down once more and then I applied 4 coats of deep mahogany varnish to give it a old fashioned vintage look to the pool triangle look.

Assembly and costumer satisfaction Back to contents page

After varnishing the wooden triangle and allowing it to dry I applied hot glue to the supports and put the plastic back in to the triangle and allowed to dry.

After assembly I looked at the clock and realised that the back did not look very aesthetically pleasing so I cut out another green back that I glued onto the other side of the supports, with a hole for the clock module so I can access it with ease. costumer satisfaction After the clock was complete I showed it to the consumer and asked him what he thought of the product. He was pleased on how the clock looked and that it met the specification. He expressed his opinion on how the clock fitted into the desired environment and how it was aesthetically pleasing, he commented on that the extra back that I put on late on in the project was a good decision because although the clocks back is against the wall it shows that every detail was thought about the clock, which adds a extra bit of quality to the product. He summed it up as a brilliant clock.

Final evaluation

Back to contents page

On this page I will evaluate my whole project I will look at how well I developed my design and how well I manufactured my product. Development
I researched existing clocks in my research but I failed to find anything that was close to what I was making my clock for. Which told me that I was making a new type of clock that is not out on the market. So I e-mailed Argos enquiring in to a new type of clock but I failed to receive a reply, but the interview I carried out gave me a good idea of what my clock would be like. Once I had completed my research I had a idea of what my designs would look like. Some of my designs were not right for the environment but that why the are called initial ideas. I decided to develop my pool table idea because it is the original idea of what is in a games room, and I think it was the best idea to use. The first developed idea was ok but I thought it needed a lot more development, so I didnt concentrate to much on that idea. I developed the idea on a lot further than my initial idea but I still found problems with it. So I developed it again and this time I got it pretty much right apart from things like the green cloth when instead I used just green acrylic and I showed this in my prodesktop design. I think that I developed my design very well although it is totally different from my initial design I think that, that was all apart of the process. Although I did develop my design as I was making it because I came across unforeseen problems that could of only been know while manufacturing my product.

Manufacturing
I am very pleased with my final product as the process of initial ideas to developing and then manufacturing has worked very well for me. i have manufactured a product that solves that problem that was put forward and solves it well. When I was making my product I encountered a few problems on the way, like the fact that I did not put l.e.ds in my final product but however I could not do this because the hands were to close to the clock face. But they were not a part of the specification so there for could be lost from the design, and now I look at my product I feel that the l.e.ds may have ruined the design because now it looks like a original classic pool set up. to see if my product was a total success I have to look at my specification, both my initial and final. Cheap to make, Attractive, Eye catching, Stand up on its own or be wall mounted, Unique that is my initial specification. I know that my clock does all those things it is cheap to make because I got all the materials from school. It is eye catching and attractive because it is unique and some thing different that isn't out on the market. My final specification is pretty much the same except it goes into much more detail.
