Quarterly check
Discharge the battery with equipment load for 15 minutes by switching of the P/P. Note down the individual cell readings. If the average cell voltage is greater than 2.0 volt, then the cells falling below by 0.03 volt of the average cell voltage are considered weak. If the average cell voltage is lesser than 2.0 volts then the cells falling below by 0.1 volt of the average cell voltage are considered weak. Focus on the identified weak cells. 5/10/2012 c:/My Documents/Cdot 3

Actions to be taken
Ensure the tightness of the terminals. Check for any terminal post corrosion. If corrosion is observed, disconnect the battery and clean the terminal connectors and bolts with a brass brush or emery paper. Reconnect the battery and have a charge discharge cycle. If no improvement, replace the cell.

Half yearly check

Ensure the tightness of the battery terminals. Check for the terminal post corrosion. If corrosion is observed, clean the affected area as follows: 1. Disconnect the battery bank from the circuit and remove the affected terminal connectors 2. Clean the terminal with a brass brush or emery paper. 3. Reconnect the connectors and apply a thin layer of petroleum jelly.

Annual check
In addition to the above checks, once a year TEST DISCAHRGE of the battery to be carried out to determine the health of the battery. 1. Charge the battery at a constant voltage of 2.3 volt per cell or 55.2 volt at charge mode for 48 hours with a current limitation of 20% of the rated capacity. 2. Then discharge the battery at 10 hour rate. If the battery is 600 AH the discharge current to be 60 Amps

Annual check.
3. The discharge is to be stopped when the total voltage across the bank falls to 42 volt or any one of the cell goes to 1.75 volt. 4. Normally 10 hours of discharge is expected and the capacity of the cell is 100% rated capacity. 5. Requirement: The actual capacity shall not be less than 90% of the rated capacity.
