Types of Grapevine There are four basic types

they are as follows:

1)Single stand chain: In this type of informal

channel, the information passes on in one direction,in other words, the communication on a single line, where a person A sends or transmits the information to B, B passes the information to C and so on.this chain continues till the information is reached to as many people as concerned.

2)Gossip chain: In this type of informal

channel or grapevine, a person A or initial or original sender actively transmits the information to more than one person.this chain is like a wheel, where the original sender 5/15/12 the center is at and the receivers are at the rim to which the

3)Probability chain: In this type of chain,

the information is passed to more than one person by A in accordance to law of probability and these other people further pass on the information to other set of people in the same manner. as the information is transmitted at random, thus this chain is also known as random chain. this chain generally occurs when the message is interesting but not significant.

4)Cluster chain: In this type of chain, the

person A transmits the information to a set of people, who may forward the information to some other selected people. most of the informal communication in business organisation follows this type.here, the sender transmits the message to those people whom he trusts and feels like 5/15/12 sharing the information with them.

1)Fastest mode/channel: It is considered

as the fastest channel as information is passed on in a greater speed and also to large number of people. as it is said rumour travels very fast. thus managers also use this channel to pass information very fast in the organisation . they also use the remarks like- its between me and you, I am telling you the confidential talk etc.

Merits of Grapevine

2) Fast Feedback: The top managers when

make some policy ,or decision generally pass on the information through grapevine ,as the feedback is received at a fast rate as compare to other 5/15/12 formal channel.

3)Psychological support: The grapevine

helps the workers to come closer to each other by sharing there grief, anger and even frustration. as is said ,subsided volcano is better than erupted one thus if feelings and emotions are shared, they give a good relief to the person concerned.

4)Supplement other channel: If some

information is not possibly been transferred through formal channel it can be made possible through informal channel or grapevine. Suppose before making a policy and implementing it , the manager wishes to know the view of workers the information can be easily transmitted through grapevine and feedback can also be collected. 5/15/12

Demerits of Grapevine
1)Distortion:
As it is common habit or tendency of the people to make the information spicy before transmitting. therefore, the information is passed on after filtering or distorting as desired by the sender. This is the reason that the information does not reach to the actual recipient as was desired. The message generally is not transmitted completely thus,it leads to misunderstanding and misinterpretation on the receivers side.

2)Incomplete

message:

3)Contradicted:

As the information 5/15/12 travels from one person to another, some part
