Market Potential
Out of the total number of children in the 3-6 age group, barely 19.64 per cent children were covered under ECCE programs Against the target of 2 million ECE centers in 2000, only 0.55 million centers are operative at present. Despite the expansion of the ECCD programmes, the coverage of children (22 per cent) under the ECCE programmes is grossly inadequate. In Tier 1 and tier 2 cities there has been a huge upsurge in Private sector commercial ventures operatizing under various names like Mothers Pride, Kidzee, Little kangaroos, Shemrock, Batchpan, and many more . Including day-care centers, nurseries, kindergartens, and pre-primary classes, gross enrolment was about 50 lacs (2001) ECCE teachers. Though originally confined to the upper and middle classes in cities, today private sector initiatives have spread to small towns, villages, semi-urban areas, urban slums, etc., reflecting the unprecedented demand for and popularity of such services. Besides these, statutory crches run under the provisions of the various Acts are estimated to cover not more than one lakh children.
