Levi Strauss & Co

How it Started ?
Levi Strauss (February 26, 1829 September 26, 1902) was a GermanJewish immigrant to the United States who founded the first company to manufacture Blue Jeans. Levi Strauss, an enterprising immigrant who happened to have a few bolts of dry goods, recognized a need for strong work pants in the mining communities of California. Levi Strauss had the canvas made into waist overalls. Miners liked the pants, but complained that they tended to chafe. Levi Strauss substituted a twilled cotton cloth from France called "serge de Nimes." The fabric later became known as denim and the pants were nicknamed blue jeans. He first designed and marketed "Levi's" in 1853, and they have stayed essentially the same ever since; there have been only minor alterations to the original design.

Jacob Davis, a tailor from Nevada, joined Levi Strauss in 1873 and he started to put copper rivets on the stress points of the working trousers, so that they did not tear at those points. These made the jeans much more long-lasting. May 20, 1873 Strauss and Jacob Davis received a United States patent for using copper rivets to strengthen the pockets of denim work pants. Levi Strauss & Co. began manufacturing the first blue jeans in San Francisco. Levi Strauss died in 1902 but his family business continued and now the word Levi is synonymous with denim jeans.
