Rebuilding the Temple
536 BC: approximately 50,000 return to Jerusalem Rebuilding halted by an appeal of the Samaritans Appealed to Darius the Great, ordered the Temple rebuilt

The Issue
Discouragement and Loss of vision (vs 2-4) The blessing withheld by God in order to motivate the people to obey Him (vs. 5-11) The leadership obeys and believes the promise (vs. 12-14) On 22 September 520 BC the work begins

The older people remember the glory of Solomons Temple The new temple is not large, which reflects on the peoples understanding of how far they fell

The political leadership is called to BE STRONG The religious leadership is called to BE STRONG The people are called to BE STRONG God reminds them of His past acts

The Promise of Future Glory (2: 6-9)


Gods glory will again fill the Temple The future will be greater than the past and all nations will be blessed The peace of the Lord will be attained there

The Blessing of a Defiled People
A question of the Law Is holiness transferable?
Holiness is not contagious Sin is contagious

A Call to Remember
They were to remember the lack of blessing The were to remember the promise of blessing

A Word to the Political Leadership


The future holds cataclysmic activities
The wars between the Greeks and Persians

Zerubbabel: Gods promise that from his line will the very image of God be presented (the chosen line renewed)
