PROJECTILE MOTION THROW UP HIGH!

PREPARED BY: SITI MARDIAH BT MOHD BAHARI UMMU AIMAN BT ABDULLAH

SCIENTIFIC CONCEPT
A projectile has a single force that acts upon it which is the force of gravity. If there were any other force acting upon an object, then that object would not be a projectile. The free-body diagram of a projectile would show a single force acting downwards and labeled force of gravity.

Regardless of whether a projectile is moving downwards, upwards, upwards and rightwards, or downwards and leftwards, the free-body diagram of the projectile is still as depicted in the diagram above. By definition, a projectile is any object upon which the only force is gravity.

ENGAGE

Soldiers need to bomb a particular place by using a cannon on an armoured tank. What they need to do to ensure the bomb hit the exact target?

EMPOWER
different angle & initial speed give different range of the cannonball different angle & initial speed give different time taken of the cannonball to hit the target using different angle

using different initial speed

RESULTS

angle: 25 degree initial speed (m/s): 18 m/s range (m): 27.7m time (s): 1.7 s

angle: 45 degree initial speed (m/s): 18 m/s range (m): 34.2m time (s): 2.7 s

angle: 65 degree initial speed (m/s): 18 m/s range (m): 25.9m time (s): 3.4s

RESULTS

initial speed (m/s): 5 m/s angle: 45 degree range (m): 3.4 m time (s): 1.0 s

initial speed (m/s): 15 m/s angle: 45 degree range (m): 24.1m time (s): 2.3 s

initial speed (m/s): 30 m/s angle: 45 degree range (m): 93.0m time (s): 4.4 s

GRAPH

The range will increases for an angle 0-45 but decreases from an angle 45-90. the highest range for the objects is 45.

GRAPH

If the initial speed/ velocity of the object increase, then the range (x-component) also will be increase.

DISCUSSIONS
What are the factor that effect the projectile motion movement? Identify the manipulated variables in the experiment. Explain how manipulated variable influence the range(m) of the projectile motion. Describe what will happen if the air resistance is present in the projectile motion.

ENHANCE
A goal is 30.00 m in front of a football player. He kicks the ball giving it a speed of 20.77 m/s at an angle of 21.20 degrees from the horizontal. If the goal keeper is standing exactly in front of the net, will the football player score the goal?

ANSWER
football range: 32.5 m angle: 21.20 degree initial speed: 20.77 m/s

YES. The football player will score the goal, because based on the angle and the initial speed, the football will move in a trajectory projectile motion and move into the goal as it range is 32.5 m.

UNIQUE FEATURE OF THIS ACTIVITY

Three responding variables: range, time and height can be recorded at the same time. Other factor can be neglected, eg: air resistance.

Two manipulated variables: initial speed and angle can be tested.

User can choose another object, eg: football, cannonball or basketball.
