A STUDY ON PERFORMANCE APPRAISAL


PRIYA PALSTICS LTD,THRISSUR

with special reference to

INTRODUCTION
Performance appraisal is the process of obtaining, analyzing and recording information about the relative worth of an employee. The focus of the performance appraisal is measuring and improving the actual performance of the employees and also the future potential of the employee. Its aim is to measure what an employee does.

RESEARCH PROBLEM

How effective is the performance appraisal system among the employees in PRIYA PLASTICS ?

SIGNIFICANCE OF THE STUDY


Performance rating helps in guiding and correlation of employees. The supervisor may use the results of training for the purpose of constructively guiding employees in the efficient performance of work. The present research study is to be carried out with the view to find out how PRIYA PLASTICS can improve their employee performance by providing training and orientation to them.

SCOPE OF THE STUDY


The scope of the study covers all the areas of various employees segments in PRIYA PLASTICS manufacturing company. It includes the administrative objectives such as promotion, transfer, wage and salary, training and development of employees and self improvement of employees are taken into consideration.

The study focuses on how PRIYA PLASTICS can improve the performance of the employees and helps the organization to check the progress towards the desired goals and aims.

OBJECTIVES OF THE STUDY


PRIMARY OBJECTIVE: To identify the effectiveness of performance appraisal in an organization. SECONDARY OBJECTIVE: To identify training and development needs of employees so as to design appropriate interventions of their growth To give feed back to the management about the performance appraisal method used by them. To assist in management decision making in areas such as salary administration, manpower plans etc.

RESEARCH METHODOLOGY
UNIVERSE OF STUDY The study was conducted on the basis of the sample from the employees of PRIYA PLASTICS LTD, THRISSUR. TOOLS FOR ANALYSIS Data analysis can be done using normal mathematical techniques like averages, percentage. PRESENTATATION OF DATA Data presentation can be done in tables and chart format.

Method of Data Collection Survey was conducted by the distribution of questionnaire to each of the 50 employees at their work place itself according to their convenience.
DESCRIPTIVE RESEARCH DESIGN Descriptive research is concerned with describing the characteristics of particular individual or group as it is. PERIOD OF STUDY The study was conducted for a period of 21 days from 6th august to 31st august,2010.

SOURCE OF DATA COLLECTION

Data used for the research has been collected from primary and secondary sources.

PRIMARY SOURCE

Primary data are collected through questionnaire and formal interview with management and employees in the organization.

SECONDARY SOURCE

Secondary data are those data, which are collected from company records, earlier research works and websites.

VARIABLES OF STUDY OTHER VARIABLES : a) Promotion b) Compensation c) Training d) Appraisal e) Recognition of appraisal f) Salary INDEPENDENT VARIABLE : Selection training and development of each employee in PRIYA PLASTICS DEPENDENT VARIABLE : Skills of employees in PRIYA PLASTICS

SAMPLING METHOD

A sample of 50 respondents in total has been conveniently selected. The responses to various elements under each question were totaled for the purpose.

SAMPLE PLANNING

Sampling plan includes sample size, sample unit. SAMPLE UNIT Sample unit includes total number of employees working in PRIYA PLASTICS . SAMPLE SIZE The sample size is to be taken as 50. Sample size was selected upon simple random sampling

LIMITATION
The study was conducted only among management staff only which constitutes only a small part of the total employees in the organization. It is not necessary that the collected data given by the organization should be accurate. Accuracy of analysis only depends up on the interview and questionnaire collected

FINDINGS
The intention of research is to analyze performance appraisal. Proper performance appraisal system provides opportunity to improve efficiency and self confidence among employees. Proper appraisal system will help to achieve companys objectives and goals. Few respondents are new to the organization so they could not respond properly about performance appraisal.

Some of the employees are not at all aware about performance appraisal because of they are new to organization.

From this survey it is clear that most of the employees are satisfied with their present salary , promotional policies, which exists in the organization

From this survey it is clear that most of the employees feel that performance appraisal is really helpful to them in deciding the compensation, training & development for improving the overall efficiency Most of the employees are satisfied with their present salary. Most of the employees need changes with the existing appraisal in the organization. Some of remedial measures are given to the employees after performance appraisal for their betterment.

SUGGESTIONS
Since some employees are not satisfied with their present increment, in order to retain them in the organization they have to be treated well. Company has to conduct counseling and training programmers periodically. The performance based standards should be considered more rather than merit based standards. If the performance appraisal systems is more effective, the employees will be aware of performance in terms of goals, targets, behavior etc. The company should try to improve the existing performance appraisal.

CONCLUSION
Performance appraisal is the process that focuses on achieving the results and accomplishing the goals of the organization. A good performance appraisal will highlight the performance level of individuals. An effective and efficient performance appraisal system is imperative for a company to achieve financial success. Performance appraisal system reveals the fact that proper performance management helps to achieve objectives of the company and improve confidence level of workers

Most of the employees in PRIYA PLASTICS are satisfied with their present performance appraisal available to them. The study enables to understand that the performance appraisal system followed by the PRIYA PLASTICS is effective; it has also led to improvement in job performance. Even though the employees have an opinion to provide better training and counseling in order to the betterment and for attaining goals.

SCOPE FOR FURTHER RESEARCH


The study was conducted only on the employees of PRIYA PLASTICS. The study does not illustrate the views and opinions of the administrative staffs , and the daily wage staffs. Further research can be conducted by including the opinions of these staffs also.
