ENVIRONMENTAL DAMAGE
1) Pollution:
The state shall endeavor to protect and improve the environment & to safeguard the forests & wildlife of the country
It is our duty to protect and improve the natural environment including, forest, lakes, rivers, wildlife & to have compassion for living creatures
protect and improve implies improvement of the natural environment as well as quality of life
Recent Chipko Movement in India is one of the best examples. - Started by the women in Kherlarilli village in Rajasthan - Stopped the felling of trees(known as Green Khejris) by hugging them when the lumbermen arrived to cut them
Govt. declared the villages of Bishnois in Punjab & Rajasthan as reserved areas & cutting of trees & killing of animals have been declared as offense. Phrase to have compassion for living creatures in Art.51A recognizes that all creatures are made equal & that animal killing should be prohibited by principle of non-violence or of moral code of conduct as killing of animals & birds is a sin of highest order
Indian Parliament passed two statutes: The Wild Life (Protection) Act,1972 The Cruelty Against Animals Act ,1962 --It is in consonance with ethical principal that unarmed enemy & mute birds & animals should not be harmed or attacked. This reminds us the story of Prince Siddhartha who saved swan.
