Work Breakdown Structure

A task-oriented 'family tree' of activities which organizes, defines and graphically displays the total work to be accomplished in order to achieve the final objectives of a project. Each descending level represents an increasingly detailed definition of the project objective. It is a system for subdividing a project into manageable work packages, components or elements to provide a common framework for scope/cost/schedule communications, allocation of responsibility, monitoring and

management.

PERT Chart

How to construct a PERT Chart

Identify all tasks or project components. Identify the first task that must be completed. Identify any other tasks that can be started simultaneously

with the first task.

Identify the next task that must be completed. Identify any other tasks that can be started simultaneously with the task identified in step 4.

Continue this process until all component tasks are sequenced.

Identify task durations. Construct the PERT chart. Determine the critical path.

Continuous Business Process Improvement

It is a process through which a project team passes on the details of any system as recommendation for improvement. The improvements are then practiced by many teams, verified and authenticated. Thus, they become standards. CBPI is entrusted to a smaller team within a team for initiating, implementing, analyzing and distributing the process.

Force Field Analysis

It is defined as a technique for identifying and analyzing the positive factors of a situation that help ('driving forces') and negative factors that hinder ('restraining forces') an entity in attaining its objectives.

It looks at forces that are either driving movement toward a goal (helping
forces) or blocking movement toward a goal (hindering forces). Force Field Analysis was enunciated by Kurt Lewin.

Steps in Force Field Analysis:

Draw the Field Identify the goal, draw the status-quo. Draw and create driving force. Draw and create restraining force. Select restraining forces to remove or reduce Brainstorm those actions that remove or reduce those forces. Create a list. Prioritize the list of actions, select one and create an action plan.

Information Risk Management Information the project. SEI-CMM and ISO Certification SEI = Software Engineering Institute at Carnegie-Mellon University; initiated by the U.S. Defense Department to help improve software development processes. CMM = Capability Maturity Model, developed by the SEI. Its a model of 5 levels of organizational maturity that determine effectiveness in delivering quality software. Organizations can receive CMM ratings by undergoing assessments by qualified auditors. Level 1 to 3 corresponds to companies which have started doing business, standardized their processes with repeatable performances with high quality. The latter levels (level 4 to 5) certify the companys capability of high standard of maturity and optimization of processes.

Summary
Work Breakdown Structure: Project network-modeling step in which the entire job is graphically subdivided into manageable work elements (tasks). WBS displays the relationship of each task to the other tasks, to the whole

and the end product (goal or objective). It shows the allocation of

responsibility, and identifies resources required and time available, at each stage for project monitoring and management. Also called activity decomposition chart.

Continuous Business Improvement Process: It is a process through which a

project team passes on the details of any system as recommendation for improvement. The improvements are then practiced by many teams, verified and authenticated. Thus, they become standards.
