Candy Shop The Video: Looking at 50 cents Candy Shop music video, the entire video is based around a notion of sexuality. We are taken into Candy Shop Lane, which is a mansion filled with large-breasted women in lingerie, analogous to the playboy mansion. 50 Cent, the only man in the video, is constantly surrounded by partially naked women. The camera switches back and forth between close-ups of the women in the mansion as they make seductive facial expressions and 50 Cent rapping outside of the mansion. In this scene, 50 Cent can be compared to Hugh Heffner in the sense that they are both portrayed as having ownership over the women in the mansions.
Candy Shop The Video: Women are portrayed as sexual objects in a few different ways. One way is through their clothing. For example, the camera shows close-ups of their partially revealed breasts. Also, one of the women is dressed in a pink sexy nurse outfit and seductively gets on top of 50 Cent while he lies in a hospital bed. This scene also shows the objectification of women through sexual interactions both with 50 Cent and each other. For example, a scene is shown of two women in a bathtub as one of the women erotically pours water on the other. In addition, the women in the video are shown promiscuously dancing and briefly touching their own crotches. Many music videos similar to this one in the rap genre also have an incredibly high notion of sexuality.
Analysis: As viewers become so familiarized with sexual activity and the objectification of women, these things become norms. Young viewers of music channels, such as MTV or VH1, may develop an idea that sex is more casual than it should be prior to reaching the maturity level of having the ability to fully understand the importance of the purpose of sex. Because sexuality is portrayed so openly on national television, the intimate meaning of sex is devalued and transformed into an unsentimental promiscuous act. These types of videos, along with the lyrics in most of the songs, can be taken offensively by women and may seem very degrading.
