Also

called as green IT.

It is an environment friendly IT where the main objective is to reduce the hazardous materials and maximize the energy efficiency. Reduce the power consumption and thus reduce the global warming.

Why is Green Computing required?

Computer consumes a lot of energy. Printing often unnecessary stuff is waste. Reduce pollution. Toxicity.

History
It originated in 1992 at the US Environmental agency that launched energy star program. Shortly after that the term green computing was coined. Shortly after that the Swedish also launched the TCO certification.

Energy Consumption
CPU uses 120 Watts CRT uses 150 Watts Energy use comes from
electrical current to run the CPU, motherboard, memory
running the fan and spinning the disk(s)

monitor (CRTs consume more power than any other computer component)
printers

Reducing the energy consumption

Turn off the computer when not in use, even if just for an hour
Turn off the monitor when not in use (as opposed to running a screen saver) Use power saver mode

Reducing the energy consumption

Use LCDs instead of CRTs as they are more power efficient.
Use hardware/software with the Energy Star label. Dont print unless required. Choose Intel & VIA Processors in comparison to AMD Processors.

Benefits:
Improve the energy savings.

Ecofriendly and environment friendly.

Approaches
Product Longevity: increase equipments lifetime Power management: for monitors&printers, that turns off the power or switches the system to low-power state Materials Recycling: save further energy and emissions

Pathways to Green Computing

Green Disposal:
makes recycling the computer easy once it is no longer necessary.
: Green Design: to develop more environmentally benign products and processes

Green Manufacturing: manufacturing

electronic components, computers with minimal impact on the environment

Methods to implement Green Computing

Carbon Free Computing: launched by VIA Technologies, a manufacturer of microprocessors in Oct 2006.it is a set of programs and products designed to help individuals and organizations reduce their impact on the environment.
Solar computing: refers to solar powered computers.

Future scope
Energy saved on computer hardware and computingwill equate tonnes of carbonemissions saved per year. The plan towards green IT should include newelectronic products and services with optimumefficiency and all possible options towards energysavings.

Conclusion
The features of a green computer of tomorrow would be like : efficiency, manufacturing & materials, recyclability, service model, self-powering, and other trends. Green computer will be one of the major contributions which will break down the 'digital divide', the electronic gulf that separates the information rich from the information poor.
